Cordless Gutta Percha Obturation Pen for Warm Vertical Compaction

Gold Cura Gutta Percha Obturation Pen is a cordless, rechargeable endodontic heat pen designed for cutting, softening and vertically compacting gutta-percha during root canal obturation.

The heating tip reaches approximately 200°C in about 3 seconds, supporting efficient down-pack and warm vertical compaction procedures. Its pen-style handheld design, one-button heating control and charging base make it a practical chairside obturation device for dentists and endodontists.

This product is intended exclusively for trained dental professionals. It should be used only as part of an appropriate root-canal treatment protocol after cleaning, shaping, irrigation, drying and master-cone fitting.

Key Features

  • Rapid heating: Reaches approximately 200°C in about 3 seconds.
  • Warm vertical compaction: Supports down-pack obturation by softening gutta-percha for controlled vertical condensation.
  • Gutta-percha cutting: The heated tip can cut excess gutta-percha at the canal orifice.
  • Cordless pen design: Compact handheld format helps improve chairside freedom of movement.
  • Push-to-heat control: Press and hold the operating button to heat; releasing the button stops active heating.
  • Charging base included: Store and recharge the obturation pen between procedures.
  • Two heating tips included: Select an appropriate tip based on the canal anatomy and intended down-pack level.
  • Autoclavable tips: The removable heating tips can be sterilized according to the supplied reprocessing instructions.
  • Professional endodontic equipment: Designed for dentists and endodontists performing root canal treatment.

Clinical Applications

When used by a trained practitioner with the appropriate endodontic technique, the Gold Cura obturation pen may support:

  • Warm vertical compaction of gutta-percha
  • Down-pack obturation during root canal filling
  • Cutting excess gutta-percha at the canal orifice
  • Softening the master gutta-percha cone before vertical condensation
  • Compaction of heat-softened gutta-percha in the apical portion of the prepared canal
  • Improved adaptation of softened gutta-percha to prepared canal walls and irregularities
  • Retreatment procedures requiring controlled softening or removal of gutta-percha, where clinically appropriate

Final obturation quality depends on canal preparation, irrigation, sealer selection, cone fit, heat-plugger selection, working-length control and the practitioner’s technique. The device does not replace sound endodontic diagnosis or clinical training.

How to Use the Obturation Pen

  1. Complete canal cleaning, shaping, irrigation and drying according to the planned endodontic protocol.
  2. Fit the master gutta-percha cone and confirm the working length and apical fit.
  3. Select a suitable heating tip and pre-fit it so that it reaches the intended down-pack level without binding.
  4. Mark the intended penetration depth with a stopper where applicable. Never extend the heated tip beyond the established working length or apical foramen.
  5. Switch on the device and confirm that it is adequately charged.
  6. Press and hold the operating button to activate heating. The tip reaches its working temperature rapidly.
  7. Use the heated tip to cut and soften the gutta-percha according to the selected warm vertical compaction technique.
  8. Release the button to stop active heating before withdrawing or repositioning the tip as required by the technique.
  9. Compact the softened gutta-percha using an appropriate hand plugger.
  10. Complete the backfill or remaining obturation using the clinician’s chosen technique and equipment.
  11. After treatment, switch off the device, allow the components to cool and reprocess the removable tips.

Safety and Reprocessing Instructions

  • High-temperature warning: The heated tip can cause burns. Never allow it to contact oral soft tissue, skin or flammable materials.
  • Use rubber-dam isolation and appropriate endodontic safety protocols.
  • Never insert the tip beyond the confirmed working length or root apex.
  • Do not force a heating tip into a narrow, curved or obstructed canal.
  • Allow the tip to cool before touching, removing or cleaning it.
  • Clean the removable tips with an appropriate medical swab or approved method before sterilization.
  • Autoclave only the removable tips at 121°C for 60 minutes, following the supplied instructions and the clinic’s validated sterilization protocol.
  • Do not autoclave the pen body or charging base.
  • Do not immerse the heating unit or charging base in liquid.
  • Stop using the device if the housing, tip, button, charging base or power components are damaged.
  • Allow sterilized tips to dry and cool fully before attaching them to the pen.

Obturation Pen vs Obturation Gun

Feature Obturation Pen Obturation Gun
Main role Cutting, heating and down-pack compaction Thermoplastic gutta-percha backfill
Typical stage Apical down-pack and removal of coronal excess Filling the remaining canal space after down-pack
Material delivery Heats gutta-percha already placed in the canal Injects heated gutta-percha through a needle
Best workflow Warm vertical compaction Backfill as part of a complete warm obturation system

An obturation pen and an obturation gun perform different functions and may be used together in a complete warm vertical obturation workflow.

Obturation Pen vs Basic Gutta Percha Cutter

A basic gutta-percha cutter is primarily used to sever excess material near the canal orifice. The Gold Cura obturation pen is designed not only to cut gutta-percha but also to soften it and support controlled vertical compaction during down-pack obturation.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a gutta percha obturation pen?

It is a heated endodontic device used to cut, soften and compact gutta-percha during root canal obturation, particularly in warm vertical compaction and down-pack techniques.

How quickly does the Gold Cura obturation pen heat?

The working tip reaches approximately 200°C in about 3 seconds.

Is this a cordless obturation pen?

Yes. It is a cordless handheld pen supplied with a charging base for chairside use and storage.

What is warm vertical compaction?

Warm vertical compaction is an obturation technique in which heat-softened gutta-percha is compacted vertically to adapt it within the prepared root canal system.

Can the pen cut excess gutta percha?

Yes. The heated tip can cut excess gutta-percha and can also be used for softening and down-pack compaction.

What comes in the box?

The pack contains one obturation pen, one charging base and two heating tips.

Can the tips be autoclaved?

Yes. The removable tips can be autoclaved at 121°C for 60 minutes according to the supplied instructions. The pen body and charging base must not be autoclaved.

Can the pen be used instead of an obturation gun?

No. The pen is mainly used for heating, cutting and down-pack compaction. An obturation gun is used to inject thermoplastic gutta-percha for backfilling the remaining canal space.

Can this be used as a gutta percha cutter?

Yes. It can cut excess gutta-percha, but it is more versatile than a basic cutter because it also supports softening and warm vertical compaction.

Is it suitable for retreatment?

The heated tip may support controlled softening or removal of gutta-percha during selected retreatment procedures, subject to case selection and the practitioner’s technique.

Who should operate the obturation pen?

It is intended exclusively for trained dentists and endodontists in a clinical or professional dental setting.

What is the warranty?

The Gold Cura Gutta Percha Obturation Pen carries a three-month warranty. Consumable or heating tips may be subject to separate warranty exclusions.

What precautions should be taken during use?

Use rubber-dam isolation, avoid contact between the hot tip and soft tissue, do not exceed the confirmed working length and follow the supplied cleaning and reprocessing instructions.
